Portraits Of Issei New Yorkers: Hiroyuki “Tora” Inoue Collection

The Hiroyuki “Tora” Inoue Collection brings together portrait photographs and related materials from ISSEI, a project documenting first-generation Japanese immigrants in New York. Created around 1980 by photographer Hiroyuki Inoue, with interviews and planning by Teruho Saito, the collection records the faces, voices, and life stories of Issei New Yorkers who lived through migration, work, war, community building, aging, and memory. Rather than focusing only on well-known figures, this collection highlights ordinary people whose experiences shaped Japanese and Japanese American history in New York.
