ニューヨーク万博の日本館 1939–40 / 1964–65
1939–1940年と1964–1965年のニューヨーク万博における日本の参加を比べると、そこには重要な変化が見えてくる。
1939年の日本館では、建築は国家を象徴するための明確な手段であり、歴史的な様式によって、日本の姿が意図的に示されていた。
建築家は、そのメッセージを形にする役割を担っていた。

一方、1964年の日本館は、そうした明確さを失っている。日本は戦後復興を遂げ、国際的な存在感を高めてニューヨークに戻ってきたが、その姿をどのように見せるべきかについては、さまざまな期待が交錯していた。前川國男による日本館は、控えめなモダニズムと、流政之の石の壁によって構成されていたが、それは強い主張というより、多くの制約の中で形づくられた建築であった。
その後、日本館はフラッシング・メドウから姿を消した。これは万博の終わりを示すだけでなく、建築の意図と、それを支える仕組みとのずれを示している。流政之の壁が十分に保存されなかったことも、その象徴である。
この対比は、国家を示す建築から、多くの制約の中でつくられる建築への転換を物語っている。ニューヨーク万博は、日本のイメージの変化とともに、20世紀における建築の役割の変化を映し出している。
