Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889–1953) was a Japanese-born modern artist who built his career in the United States and became one of the most highly regarded painters working in New York during the first half of the twentieth century. His development and success were shaped not only by his talent, but also by American art schools, teachers, patrons, fellow artists, and cultural institutions. Kuniyoshi was selected for the Museum of Modern Art’s landmark exhibition Nineteen Living Americans in 1929, received first prize at the Carnegie Institute’s international exhibition in 1944, and was honored with a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1948.
