Bumpei Usui, Ukulele, c.1928 (1928, Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists)

Bumpei Usui had previously painted several figures on the canvas, but here we see a woman sitting on a sofa playing the ukulele. The Nichibei Jiho (The Japan-America Times) wrote, “‘Ukulele’ is a good picture of Bumpei, whose compositions
are difficult to find a focus, but ‘Ukulele’ has a focus, and therefore is coherent and shows a great maturity of technique. (Eitaro Ishigaki, “The 12th Independent Art Exhibition,”
Nichibei Jiho, March 17, 1928).
