Fumiyo Kozai was the daughter of Tatsuo Kozai, an early member of New York’s Japanese community, and was born and raised in the United States as a Nisei. In the 1920s, she married Jiro Kozai, a writer, publisher, and community leader. After Jiro was arrested and interned during World War II, Fumiyo traveled to Japan with their daughters. Her farewell letter to friends, preserved in the Kozai Family Collection, offers a valuable personal record of how the war disrupted the lives of Japanese American families in New York.
