From the Library of Congress: “Photo shows a crowd gathered in New York City for the arrival of Japan’s first diplomatic mission to the United States on June 16, 1860, with cannons in the foreground preparing to fire a salute.” Printed note on the back: “The crowds are dispersed from around the guns prior to firing the salute, June 16, 1860. (The gathering of heavy clouds prevented any further instantaneous operation on the day of the arrival.)”
