Recording: “Japanese Eyes on America: 150 Years Since the Iwakura Mission to the U.S.” Panel Discussion

Year: 2022

This public event, presented by the Digital Museum of the History of Japanese in New York, coincided with the launch of its first ever special exhibit. Featuring guest speakers Janice Nimura, Dr. Jordan Sand, and Dr. Haruko Wakabayashi, the conversation covered many lesser-known aspects of the 1871-1873 Iwakura Mission, including the five young Japanese women who accompanied the delegation, connections with Rutgers University, and insights into the delegates’ views on race in America. The event was hosted by Japan Society and took place on March 24, 2022.
