From the Library of Congress: “Photograph shows the procession of Japanese embassy officials after their arrival in New York City and spectators watching the event from the rooftops of buildings on Broadway. The word “Tommy” in the caption refers to Tateishi (Tamehachi) Onojiro, a 17-year-old Japanese interpreter travelling with the delegation who garnered attention from the American press and public during the mission to the United States.”
