Japanese customs in New York

Year: 1871

This cartoon shows William Tweed, an influential 19th century Tammany Hall Democrat, New York Mayor Oakey Hall, city comptroller Richard Connelly, and cartoonist Thomas Nast. All of the people pictured are dressed as samurai. Nast offers Connelly a dagger which says “resign”. The title states: “Tamani Tycooni invite Connolli to Hara-Kiri. — No-go-he.”
