Gifts Presented to Japanese Shogunate Delegation

Year: 6/20/1860

These photographs show a gold pocket watch and commemorative medal gifted to the Edo Shogunate delegation that traveled to the U.S. in 1860 to exchange ratifications of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the U.S. and Japan. Both gifts feature a portrait of President James Buchanan, with whom the delegation met on June 5, 1860. The gifts were presented to the delegation in New York on June 20, 1860 by U.S. Secretary of State Lewis Cass. The gold watches were manufactured by the American Watch Company, now the Waltham Watch Company. The watch is inscribed with the words “His Majesty the Tycoon of Japan.” The medal’s back reads “In Commemoration of the First Embassy from Japan to the United States 1860.”
