Abstract: In 1884 (Meiji 17), he dropped out of the Tokyo University Preparatory School (yobimon; the First Higher School of Japan’s predecessor) and moved to the United States in April of the same year. He was one of the international students at Rutgers University. After that, he transferred to Yale University.
